Blog Post #1-About Me

My name is Ying, and I’m in my second year at UVic as Majoring in Business Commerce. I’ve really always been interested in how businesses work, and how they impact the world. The reason is this curiosity in the first place, because I would like to further my education in the field of Business Commerce. Introduction to Business was one of my favourite first year courses so far because I learned the foundational concepts of business strategy and management.

What is Open Distributed Education?

In open distributed education, learning is enabled from multiple locations through technology that is different from traditional face to face learning. Especially useful in cases where students cannot be in person — even students who are simply not physically able, due to disabilities or work commitments, or for example are located abroad. Open distributed education ensures that with the supports provided by an open distributed education, everyone can access education no matter their circumstances could.

What is Open Education?

Open education is learning materials that are free for anyone to access and free to use and adapt. It’s important in breaking down financial barriers so quality education becomes more accessible. This is a goldmine for business students like me, if we have access to free resources, it means we can go deep in topics without the problems we’ll have to face if we have to buy materials in both prices and physical form.

Learning Modes

The learning modes include online, face to face, blended, and hybrid. Personally, I prefer blended learning, as it combines the best of both worlds: It builds connections, the in person interaction, and the flexibility to submit and take assignments online. This method is useful to me to take care of rest other than academics.

Digital literacy

Digital literacy is the capacity to locate, access, embed, analyze and navigate digital media for personal and professional reasons. Digital literacy is important because being a business student, there are so many assignments or projects that ask me to go online to use on the different platforms or software. In turn, I have had to learn how to up skill in data analysis and presentation software. These courses would have been a challenge without strong digital literacy.

Digital identity

Digital identity is your online digital identity in delivered via your posts, pictures and such content. I know full well that what I expose online portrays my professional image. When it comes to my business there is the importance of reputation and it’s important to me to have my digital presence represent what I want to do in my future career. I refuse to share anything personal or something that harms my face to my professional image as a student and a future business professional.
